Zoom Language Interpretation. How Does It Work?

As remote work becomes increasingly more popular, video conferencing platforms like Zoom have emerged as effective tools to help execute plans uninterrupted. However, language barriers have been a major problem faced by users globally. Fortunately, technology has become an assistant in the field of interpretation.

Without effective translating services like Zoom video, conferences between multilingual speakers would hit a wall. The inability to communicate in different languages carries profound costs. It often leads to important ideas being left unexpressed and even lost business deals.

The Zoom Interpretation feature is a promising solution to this problem. Through language interpretation, the feature grants effective communication across many languages. It enables the meeting host to assign a language interpreter who will perform the translation from one language to another. But how does this feature work?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use Zoom Language Interpretation for more effective communication across different languages in your next Zoom meeting.

What Is Zoom Language Interpretation?

Launched in 2011, Zoom gained popularity during the coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020. As a communications technology company, Zoom enabled individuals and businesses alike to connect. This helped them to collaborate from different locations across the world.

In 2023, Zoom generated over 4 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. With this new success, the company keeps adding new features to attract more users. One of these features is Zoom Interpretation.

Zoom Language Interpretation offers live interpretation services during meetings, webinars, and video conferences. As the meeting host, you are able to designate up to 20 participants as interpreters. These interpreters will translate the meeting in real time using separate audio channels.

Attendees can then choose to listen to the audio channel in the language they can understand. This feature removes huge language barriers. It allows participants across different languages to communicate freely in different online gatherings.

What are the Requirements for Using the Zoom Language Interpretation Feature?

When configured properly, Zoom Language Interpretation makes multilingual communication an effortless task. These are the basic requirements to activate Zoom Interpretation:

  • You can’t use Language Interpretation with your Personal Meeting ID.
  • You can’t use this feature for an instant meeting; it is only for scheduled meetings or webinars.
  • You must enable Language Interpretation.
  • The meeting host must have a Pro, Business, Education, or Enterprise account.
  • You can only use the feature in the main session of a meeting, not in breakout rooms.
  • The host and participants must have compatible Zoom desktop or app versions.
  • To access this feature, you (the host) need a paid account.
  • To activate the Interpretation feature, contact the Zoom Support team.

Hiring a Zoom Interpreter

The Zoom Interpreter feature can’t work without a professional interpreter to interpret during the meeting. This is in addition to the prerequisites mentioned above. An interpreter can facilitate communication across cultures.

Make sure to hire a professional remote interpreter. They should have the expertise to speak another language and capture the nuances of the foreign language.

Managing Your Responsibilities as a Zoom Interpreter

As a Zoom language interpreter, you can only use one language channel at a time to eliminate or reduce awkward language blending. This reduces confusion. You can always switch between the native audio channel and the interpretation audio channel.

Before the meeting, you will be notified that you have been assigned to interpret a specific language. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client. After you sign, simply click OK to accept the language assigned to you for interpretation.

You can always switch between audio channels during the meeting. If you don’t understand the main language channel, you can always listen to another language interpretation broadcasted on another audio channel. You can then translate from that language. To change from the main language channel to another language channel:

  • Click the menu next to Listening in.
  • Choose the audio channel you understand.

Listening to Language Interpretation

As a participant, the Interpretation feature allows you to access a real-time translated version of the meeting. Here is a simplified guide to connect to an audio channel from your device:

  • Click Interpretation in your meeting controls.
  • Click the language of your choice.
  • Tap the toggle to Mute Original Audio.
  • To save changes, click Done.
